Case description

During an August 1976 canoeing trip in northern Maine, Jack and Jim Weiner, Chuck Rak and Charlie Foltz reported a bright object while night-fishing in the Allagash waterway. Accounts differ on the precise date and location: one identifies August 26 near Smith Brook, while others give August 20 at Eagle Lake. The men described a luminous object moving toward their canoe after a flashlight was directed at it. They paddled toward shore. Their next recollections included being back at camp and finding that a substantial fire had burned down much further than they expected, leaving an interval they could not account for. Years later, dreams and conversations brought the episode back to their attention. Raymond Fowler arranged separate hypnotic sessions in which the men described being taken aboard, seeing small occupants and undergoing physical examinations and sample collection. Drawings and interviews became part of the investigation. Those interior scenes came from the later recollections, while the lake observation and return to shore were the experience initially remembered together.
