Case description
The Carapito account concerns Maria Conceição Reis, twenty-four, and her nine-year-old sister Elisabete, near their rural home by the Diz River in Beira Alta, Portugal, at about 9:30 p.m. on January 3, 1977. While washing clothes, they noticed a dark, motionless figure on a nearby hill. A distinct encounter reported by an automobile technician identified as C.A.C.M. took place later that night, after midnight on January 4; both reports were collected in the same CEAFI investigation.
The figure reportedly resembled a bulky box approximately eight feet tall, with a round head above it and legs narrowing toward the ground. A noise likened to several dogs barking through a microphone seemed to come from its direction. The frightened witnesses went indoors and locked the house. They then heard a dragging sound outside along the sandy path, which appeared to stop near a pine grove.
The accounts describe distress after the sighting and reported ground marks. Ballester Olmos and Fernández Peris’s survey attributes the sisters’ shock to Elisabete; later summaries instead refer to the adult witness. The investigation also described a small area of elevated radiation near the hill and a compressed circular patch of ground by the pine trees, while noting uranium deposits in the region. These reported findings were discussed alongside C.A.C.M.’s separate encounter. The sisters themselves described no spacecraft.
