Case description
During the early hours of February 24, 1977, railway employee Lothar Schäfler drove innkeeper Rudi Grutsch home to Café Waldeck at Langenargen, on Lake Constance in Baden-Württemberg. Both described two bright objects, each carrying four blue-white frontal lights, illuminating the area before approaching one another and disappearing. Grutsch checked his watch at about 2:10 a.m. The German investigation records different viewing positions and does not treat their observations as identical.
Later, Schäfler said an object came much closer and emitted a high steady tone. While trying to get inside the building, he encountered two figures roughly 1.3 and 1.1 metres tall. He described pale skin, round bald heads, small slanting eyes, round mouths, no visible noses, ears or necks, and arms reaching below the knees. Light-green, star-pointed neck ruffs were conspicuous. The figures rocked sideways; he reported no attack, but panicked and called for help.
He broke a door pane to enter, cutting two fingers. Neighbours heard the disturbance and summoned police, who took him to hospital. The investigators report a blood-alcohol reading of 0.3 per mille, despite initial police suspicion of intoxication. The injuries substantiate broken glass, not the claimed beings. This is a detailed witness investigation with discrepant perspectives and a prosaic injury mechanism; the imported region “Bavaria” is geographically incorrect.
