Case description
Karen McLennan and Fiona Morrison, both ten, reportedly heard an unusual humming sound while playing near a disused railway at New Elgin on May 18, 1977, around 6:30 p.m. Investigating toward fenced woodland, they said they saw a polished metallic object hovering low over the old track depression, approximately three to four hundred metres away.
The object was described as roughly thirty feet long, with rounded ends, a small dome, a steady red light above and a red band around its lower section. A tall, thin, silver-clad figure stood nearby, partly screened by bushes. Accounts mention silver buttons and no visible facial features. The contemporary Awareness summary calls its arms disproportionately short; other retellings say long, an inconsistency retained rather than resolved by invention.
When the figure began approaching, the girls reportedly ran, then looked back as the object departed in jerky stages. Their mothers and a neighbour were said to have heard the hum; that does not make them independent witnesses to the figure. Damaged trees were reported afterward, and samples allegedly disappeared in the post. Jenny Randles and Bryan Hartley's publication trail preserves the story, but no surviving analysis establishes its cause. The plate compresses the viewing distance and labels that artistic choice.
