Case description

On August 30, 1977, a family returning from a football game near Healdsburg noticed a large cream-colored light and smaller colored lights toward the coastal horizon. Jacques Vallée's account calls them the Cray family: the mother, Bob, 19, Cathy, 18, Jeff, 10, and Josette, three. They stopped before Bob took over driving toward home. The later phase was more dramatic. They reported an oval object about 50 feet across close to the road, with illuminated windows and two powerful beams. Only Cathy described a silhouette resembling a frog's head in a window; the source does not establish a frog-like body. Her mother closed her eyes and Jeff shielded his face. Several family members reported nausea, headaches or disturbed sleep afterward. Other local observers reportedly saw unusual lights that evening. Vallée and a colleague investigated in 1978. National Guard rescue-helicopter exercises offshore matched the initial distant lights closely in time and bearing. Those aircraft were not reported over Healdsburg, leaving the alleged close phase unresolved in his analysis. The Atlas shorthand suggesting three close saucers compresses a more complicated sequence. The reconstruction therefore shows one reported close object and an indistinct window silhouette, while preserving the conventional explanation for the earlier lights.
