Case description
Pauline Coombes, her mother Mrs Grycz and Coombes’s four children were returning to Ripperston Farm on the sunny afternoon of 30 October 1977. Around three o’clock, they reportedly watched a whitish flat disc travel toward the sea and descend toward Stack Rocks. The women said it disappeared into the rocky islet without the impact or explosion they expected.
The family crossed fields toward the headland and looked across roughly four hundred yards of water. The women then described two silver-clad humanlike figures with unusually large, elongated rectangular heads. One moved along the uneven rock as if walking normally; another repeatedly rose and lowered in a dark opening surrounded by a shimmering haze. The opening appeared to close and reopen. The figures and opening eventually disappeared.
Investigator Randall Jones Pugh published the account in Flying Saucer Review, drawing on his interview with Coombes. The disc approach and the later humanoid observations were successive phases, not a documented view of occupants exiting a visible saucer. Nor were actual steps visible, despite one figure’s stairlike movement. The plate labels its combined presentation accordingly. The reported disappearance into rock remains a witness interpretation, without demonstrating a physical doorway or underground installation.
