Case description
The dated French Gulch entry concerns Jane Chapin seeing an unfamiliar figure inside her trailer on 14 January 1978. The description attributed to Jacques Vallée identifies a flat head, large eyes and a conspicuous nose. Hatch places the appearance near her bed. Neither account supplies a full facial drawing, detailed clothing, measured height or a description of the figure arriving in a vehicle that night.
Jane and her husband Clint are pseudonyms in the published retrospective. They lived at a remote gold-mining property and had previously described unusual objects and experiences there. Preston Dennett’s later article discusses separate events in 1969, 1976, 1977 and 1980, including alleged material samples and illness. Those surrounding stories explain why the couple came to researchers’ attention, but do not turn this brief indoor observation into a witnessed boarding or bodily removal.
The retrospective cites Vallée’s investigation but contains obvious chronology slips, including an August event labelled one month after January. Its entire sequence therefore cannot be accepted as a precise continuous timeline. The 1978 record remains a reported indoor figure appearance. Its illustration shows Jane and the specifically described flat-headed, large-nosed figure; no craft from a different year is placed outside the trailer, and no later physical or laboratory claim is presented as evidence for what appeared on this date.
