Case description
At about 11:30 p.m. on March 17, 1978, an engineer identified as Edwards reported a strange figure near Risley, Cheshire. Jenny Randles and Paul Whetnall investigated the account and published it in Flying Saucer Review. The setting was a road near an industrial security fence, illuminated by the witness’s car headlights.
Edwards described a silvery humanoid roughly seven feet tall, with a darker head. It came down an embankment with a stooping posture and its arms held out. He said it turned toward him and that light appeared to come from its eyes. During the encounter he felt extremely heavy and unable to move normally. The figure subsequently seemed to pass through a fence.
The report also describes damage inside his car radio. Later popular accounts sometimes turn this into an exploding radio, which overstates the original description. No spacecraft was seen in this episode. A further encounter dated March 23 belongs to a separate part of the investigation and should not be merged into the March 17 sequence. The Atlas follows the initial roadside observation and its reported effects.
