Case description

Beginning in September 1977, communities along the northeastern coast of Pará, Brazil, reported repeated low-level luminous phenomena. Accounts clustered around Colares, Santo Antônio do Tauá, Vigia, Mosqueiro and Marajó, then extended to Belém, São Domingos do Capim, Benevides, Tomé-Açu and São Félix do Xingu. Local newspapers popularized the name Chupa-Chupa for lights that witnesses said approached people and were sometimes followed by weakness, temporary paralysis or burns. The volume of reports prompted the First Regional Air Command of the Brazilian Air Force to conduct what became known as Operation Prato. A field team led by Captain Uyrangê Hollanda established observation points and carried out repeated night watches. The surviving dossier describes military personnel working with recurring civilian witnesses, recording times, directions, apparent altitude, motion and physical effects rather than treating the episode as one isolated sighting. The archive item represented by this Atlas record is a confidential operational dossier assembling approximately 130 observation entries from September 1977 through November 1978. It is therefore a documentary hub for a campaign and many witnesses, not a claim that all 130 entries describe one object or one continuous event. One preserved entry attributed to Amélia Martins da Silva describes an inverted-saucer form with an accentuated, almost triangular upper point. Its colour reportedly changed from yellow to red, while an intense blue-green lower section gave an impression of transparency. A red lamp-like light appeared at the lower apex. The apparent size was estimated at 1.30 to 1.40 metres and altitude near 30 metres. The witness reported a hissing dynamo-like noise. The object moved in an east-west zigzag, initially slowly and then with increasing speed. After reaching a road, it reportedly followed the route for about three kilometres before resuming a westward course. Another entry, attributed to Raimundo Francisco das Chagas, describes a steep dive toward the observer and variable speed. These are witness estimates preserved in the dossier, not instrument-derived flight measurements. Across the broader operation, reports repeatedly described yellow-red luminous bodies, directed blue flashes, low altitudes and abrupt turns or acceleration. Some civilians attributed serious physical effects to focused light. The record also summarizes a reported 1.5-metre humanoid emerging through a hatch in entry 017, a grounded hat-shaped object with two supports in entry 083, and holes in the ground at Fazenda Jejú. Each belongs to a separate sub-entry and should not be collapsed into one composite encounter. The team used period Minolta SRT 101 and Yashica TLS Electro 35 cameras and Super-8 film during months of observation. The dossier reportedly includes photographs and about twenty pages of contemporary Pará newspaper clippings. Those materials have archival significance, but any individual image must still be matched to its entry, generation, caption and rights status before the Atlas displays it as case evidence. Two later aviation entries describe pilots reporting nearby objects: one on the São Félix do Xingu route and another near Tomé-Açu, where an object was said to hold position relative to an EMB-710 for four minutes before climbing rapidly. Pilot testimony and military custody strengthen the documentary trail, but they do not establish the performance estimates as calibrated measurements. The provenance distinction is essential. Brazilian government custody supports the authenticity of the military dossier as a historical document. It does not prove that every witness interpretation was accurate, that all lights shared one cause, or that any object was extraterrestrial. Weather, astronomical, aircraft, perceptual and other explanations must be assessed entry by entry. CE3 is retained because the dossier metadata includes occupant or humanoid claims among its sub-records. The central portrait instead reconstructs the best-documented common denominator: Hollanda's field team conducting a disciplined coastal night watch with period cameras, maps and logs while reported lights manoeuvre offshore. It is an illustrative reconstruction of the investigation, not one of the Air Force photographs and not proof of an extraterrestrial cause.
