Case description
On October 3, 1978, Hideichi Amano, a snack-bar proprietor and amateur radio operator, took his young daughter to a mountain overlooking Sayama, Japan, to use his radio equipment. As he prepared to leave, the car interior became brilliantly illuminated even though he could not initially identify a light source outside.
He reported a beam directed through the windshield and a small figure beside the car. A tube or instrument from the figure's face pressed against his temple. Amano heard rapid, voice-like sounds and felt that a message was being transmitted to him. He described a rounded head, pointed projections, small luminous eyes and no visible neck.
The car would not start and its lights failed as he became unable to move. He estimated that the confrontation continued for several minutes, although his watch had stopped. The figure then faded from sight, the beam disappeared and the car's equipment resumed operating. Amano drove down the mountain and saw that his daughter was again standing and asking for water.
He reported the event to police and later spoke about it publicly, including on television. He described a severe headache afterward. Further claims about a future meeting and a contact device came from later hypnotic recollections and are kept distinct from the mountain-road experience he initially remembered.
