Case description

At about 01:30 on December 14, 1978, a man identified in the later account as John said he felt compelled to drive along Route 9E near Brewer, Maine. It was a cold winter night. The journey, as summarized in the surviving catalogue, did not begin as a planned search for a UFO; the sense of compulsion was itself part of the experience he later described. While he was on the road, John's car engine reportedly stopped even though the headlights remained illuminated. He then observed a dark rectangular object hovering nearby. The object was associated with a crackling sound and changing colored illumination that fell across the road and surrounding area. John said a tingling sensation spread through his body and that he became unable to move. During that immobilized interval, he perceived reassurance and information presented as communication from the intelligence behind the object. The message reportedly included a claimed stellar origin and a promise that the visitors would return. The preserved version does not describe visible occupants, entry into the object or bodily transport. The object departed and normal control eventually returned. Afterward, John reported feeling unusually cold and later experiencing headaches and peeling skin. Those symptoms are part of his account, but the accessible summary does not provide contemporaneous medical records, dosimetry, laboratory findings or an independent diagnosis connecting them to radiation or another external exposure. The principal source named by the catalogue is investigator Raymond Fowler's book UFO Testament. The complete investigative file and any original interview recording were not available for this dossier. The Atlas therefore treats the online text as a derivative summary rather than silently upgrading it into a complete primary account. Several elements could be examined separately if fuller records emerge: the exact road location, condition of the vehicle, any electrical inspection, weather and road conditions, medical documentation, and whether another driver observed the lights or stopped car. Until then, the engine failure, paralysis, communication and physical aftereffects remain reported claims from one witness. The case is retained as CE5 because the witness described purposeful reassurance and a message, not because the claimed origin has been verified. No external evidence presently establishes what caused the stalled vehicle, lights, bodily sensations or perceived communication. Plausible categories of interpretation remain open, including an unusual external event, sleep-related or neurological experience, misperception, or fabrication. The portrait reconstructs the roadside moment only: one late-1970s car with its headlights still burning, one immobilized driver and one rectangular object casting changing colored light above a winter road. It omits aliens, beams, abduction imagery and visible injury. It is an illustrative reconstruction, not documentary evidence.
