Case description

On 17 March 1980, Margery Sherrard, her adult daughter Deborah and Deborah’s friend Teresa Malvaney drove from Rainhill toward Knowsley after an exercise class and coffee. Deborah drove. A descending light approached over fields and houses; when they stopped, they described a cloverleaf-like outline, four white corner lights and a dull-orange underside. Frightened by its approach, they drove away. Margery’s final view resembled a low bowler hat disappearing behind houses. After leaving Teresa at home, only mother and daughter made the return journey around 11:35 p.m. They reported another reddish light pacing the car near Lord Derby’s estate. Near Elm Cottage it appeared diamond- or cone-shaped, changed toward yellow and approached. These descriptions should not be treated as simultaneous sightings of multiple craft. The women continued home rather than investigating a landing. Brian Fishwick’s investigation also recorded three separate roadside appearances of a similar scruffy man: long grey hair, a thin pale face and an apparently white raincoat. One occurred on the outward journey and two on the return; the women did not know whether they saw the same person repeatedly or whether he was connected with the lights. This is not a report of three aliens standing together. The labelled sequence plate shows one such figure and the initial three-woman journey.
