Case description
During the nights of December 26–28, 1980, American personnel stationed at RAF Woodbridge and RAF Bentwaters reported unusual lights in Rendlesham Forest. On the first night, John Burroughs and Jim Penniston entered the woods after security patrols saw lights apparently descending.
Burroughs described intense lights moving among the trees. Penniston later gave a closer account of a small triangular object on the ground and said he examined its surface before it departed. Their early statements were shorter and less elaborate than some later recollections.
Two nights later, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt led personnel into the forest. He recorded observations on a pocket tape and later wrote a memorandum describing unusual lights, reported impressions in the ground and radiation readings. The tape and memo are authentic historical records, but interpretation remains contested.
Explanations include a bright lighthouse, stars, meteor activity, misperception and rumor amplification. Later claims of binary code, direct contact and structured occupants are not supported at the same level as the contemporary documents.
CE3 is retained because later witness accounts include a landed object and possible occupants, but the strongest record concerns lights and a close object. The portrait reconstructs the first-night approach without adding beings. It is illustrative, not evidence.
