Case description

An 82-year-old woman identified only as Mrs T was visiting her son's small farm south of Dunedin on 11 July 1981. The fuller UFO Research Australia Newsletter account places the beginning at 6:15 p.m., rather than the imported catalogue's early-morning time. On entering her bedroom to retire, she noticed a bright light and went to the window. In an adjacent paddock, approximately 80 metres away, she reportedly saw a pulsating, football-shaped object about the size of a compact car, with an intense light on its lower half. One occupant appeared to operate controls in a transparent cabin at the nose. Another stood in a central transparent tube projecting above the craft and used something resembling a telephone. Both were described as hairless, white-skinned and wearing grey coveralls. A smaller second object was visible farther south. Her son came to the window and reportedly watched for about six minutes before going to bed. Mrs T said she continued observing both objects manoeuvring over the fields and sky for eight hours, eventually rising straight up. Neither photographs nor discernible ground traces were reported. John Knapman received the account on 29 November 1981, several months afterward. The reconstruction preserves the reported two occupant positions and treats their portraits, machinery and compressed viewing distance as illustrative.
