North / Mutare, Zimb being encounter — August 15, 1981

Around 6:30 p.m. on August 15, 1981, workers at the La Rochelle estate outside Mutare, Zimbabwe, reported an unusual moving ball of light. Clifford Muchena said he saw it near the tea-room and rang an emergency bell. Other witnesses placed it in or near the observation tower, where its light resembled flames, before it moved toward the estate's Fantasy building. Muchena described three tall men, possibly four, in brilliant silvery-white overalls. At first he thought one was a familiar estate warden. When the figures turned, the brightness prevented him from distinguishing their faces or headgear. He said he shielded his eyes and fell down. The terse imported description of a disabling beam goes beyond that more specific first-person description; no lasting eye injury was reported in the interview. Cynthia Hind visited in November 1982 and interviewed Muchena and other estate residents. Their observations were not identical: one woman described two men with flashlight-like lights and visible blue trousers. The MUFON article preserves these differences and the witnesses' interpretations involving spirits.
