Case description
Before dawn on June 5, 1983, Mario Claretto was awakened by barking dogs at his home near Varzi, Pavia. Looking outside, he saw a silvery object in an alfalfa field roughly 160 metres away. Its dome appeared to rotate, presenting a bright orange light and alternating surfaces. His wife Velia also observed it, and neighbour Bruno Stafforini became another witness.
Claretto later went outside. A stranger approached the object and then ran away. In the detailed investigation summary, that person is not securely identified as an occupant. Around 5:50 a.m., the object reportedly moved low over the crop, rose and emitted vapour. Its changing dome gave it different apparent shapes before it accelerated south-southwest.
Bent vegetation and subsequent poultry deaths were reported. Investigator Giorgio Pattera noted that the dead birds had not been examined promptly, preventing a firm determination of cause. The catalogue also compresses a later visit by men taking photographs into the entry; that aftermath should not be turned into beings present during the original observation. The plate therefore shows the witnesses, the reported object and the ordinary-looking stranger without assigning him an extraterrestrial identity.
