Case description

A contemporary Stampa Sera report of May 7, 1985 places this encounter near Castaldia, about two kilometers from Piancavallo, at 10:20 p.m. on April 14. Roberto C., a university student, and Manuela D., a secretary, were both twenty-three and returning from an excursion. Roberto said his headlights illuminated two extremely broad figures wearing silver-grey overalls. He estimated them at about 1.70 meters tall and 1.40 meters wide, with no arms apparent. Manuela was looking from the other side of the car, and he initially did not tell her what he had seen. Roughly three hundred meters farther on, the engine stopped within a yellow-green fog. After restarting, he drove clear, opened a window and felt intense cold despite previously muggy conditions. Further stops followed as the car continued downhill; it eventually required towing. The fog reportedly disappeared and returned. No conversation or distinct aerial craft was described. Later retellings substantially alter the setting, adding a snowstorm and taller, helmeted figures with square dark visors. Those details conflict with the contemporary account and should remain attributed to that later version. The early report establishes the published claim, without demonstrating a cause for the engine failures or identifying the figures.
