Case description

César Locatelli reportedly encountered a large transparent object on a country road near Ménétrux-en-Joux in June 1986 while searching for bees before dawn. Catalogues commonly give approximately 20 June and 04:00, although the Atlas preserves only the month. The object was illuminated from within by blue light and stood partly across the road and partly over a large roadside stone. Inside, Locatelli described six people about 1.5 to 1.6 metres tall, dressed in white tunics and hoods resembling monks’ clothing. They appeared to stand around a table. Their faces were concealed. When he tried to back away, his car reportedly would not start. A high-pitched sound followed, after which the vehicle started and he drove away. As he left, one figure’s changed position allowed him to glimpse fair curly hair. The fuller source chain identifies an investigation by Michel Morel-Seythoux and Joël Mesnard, published in LDLN 305 and translated in Flying Saucer Review 37/1. The Atlas’s nine-metre saucer description is therefore supplemented by the transparent body, blue illumination and hooded occupants. These remain one observer’s reported impressions; the car trouble does not establish a causal mechanism. The plate uses June rather than treating the approximate twentieth as a verified exact date.
