Case description
The Stocksbridge entry compresses several September 1987 reports around the unfinished bypass near Pearoyd Bridge. Its reference is Paul Devereux's Earth Lights Revelation. A fuller account by journalist David Clarke, who interviewed participants, separates security guards' earlier observations from the police episode around midnight on September 11–12. No spacecraft was reported in those events.
Guards Steven Brookes and David Goldthorpe said they saw children in old-fashioned clothing near a pylon, followed by a cloaked figure on the bridge that disappeared. Their distress led to inquiries involving their employer, a clergyman and police. These figures should not automatically acquire the generic Grey anatomy suggested by the database's compact classification.
PC Dick Ellis and Special Constable John Beet later parked near the bridge. A moving shadow was initially attributed to loose plastic. They then reported a fleeting man beside the car: Ellis glimpsed a torso, while Beet described old-fashioned clothing, including a waistcoat and cravat. They searched without finding anyone. Subsequent thumps against the vehicle prompted their departure and an official report. Clarke's account treats the experiences within developing road-ghost folklore; it finds no evidence for the disturbed-grave legends attached later. The record preserves witness claims, rather than establishing a supernatural or extraterrestrial cause.
