Case description

On March 20, 1988, John R. Salter Jr. and his adult son John III left Grand Forks, North Dakota, in a pickup truck and headed south. Near Richland Center, Wisconsin, they found themselves following Highway 14 rather than the route they had intended. Their ordinary memory of the journey became discontinuous at about 6:25 p.m. Awareness resumed around 7:45 p.m. The two men realized that they were off course, but they did not then remember an encounter filling the intervening period. They continued to an overnight stop. The following day near Peoria, both reported seeing a brilliant object pass above the truck, a sighting they remembered without the same missing interval. The more elaborate Richland Center narrative did not surface immediately. Salter Jr.'s recollections began in June 1988 through dreams and spontaneous flashbacks; his son's began in November. They described being diverted onto a rough rural road where several small humanoids and one taller guide waited near an illuminated craft. The visitors appeared calm, and the men said they walked toward the object rather than recalling a violent capture. Inside, Salter Jr. later remembered a nasal implant and injections into his neck and chest. John III's face was reportedly scanned. Both said they were escorted back to the pickup, and the son remembered watching the illuminated object depart. These scenes were reconstructed months after the trip rather than preserved as an uninterrupted memory on March 20. Salter Jr. interpreted later changes in his body and health as beneficial consequences of the encounter and regarded the experience positively. The available account does not provide independent medical demonstration of an implanted device, nonhuman injection or extraordinary cure. Personal improvement after an event does not establish its proposed cause. The case has two named witnesses and a shared travel chronology, but the strongest CE4 details depend on retrospective recall. Dreams and flashbacks can carry genuine subjective force while remaining vulnerable to memory reconstruction, mutual discussion and expectation. The Atlas therefore keeps the 1988 route anomaly and reported light separate from the later beings and medical procedures. No authenticated photograph, instrument record or recovered implant confirms the craft or occupants. Possible explanations include an unusual experience followed by delayed recall, ordinary navigational error, psychological or memory effects, or a constructed narrative. The surviving material does not decide among them. CE4 describes the claimed onboard procedures, not their verification. The portrait reconstructs the threshold scene instead of the invasive procedures: the older father and adult son beside their 1988 pickup on a rough Wisconsin road, several small figures and one taller guide softened by mist near a grounded luminous craft. The truck and roadway remain visually solid while the later-recalled figures are deliberately less definite. It is an illustrative reconstruction, not documentary evidence.
