Case description

In late September 1989, children playing in a park in Voronezh, then part of the Soviet Union, reported a red or pink luminous object descending near poplar trees. The date most often attached to the principal Atlas record is September 27. The children described a large oval or spherical craft settling close to the ground. A hatch opened and one or more extremely tall humanoid figures emerged. The beings were said to have small heads, massive bodies and unusual eyes or markings. A smaller robot-like form was also reported. In some versions a boy temporarily vanished after a figure directed a device or gaze toward him, then reappeared when the object left. Adults in the area reported unusual lights, but the elaborate occupant sequence came principally from the children. Soviet news agency TASS distributed the story internationally during a period of unusually open press, producing enormous publicity. Newspaper diagrams, witness drawings and later illustrations quickly blended together in circulation. Physical evidence was claimed in the form of ground marks and unusual readings, but published measurements were inconsistent and did not establish a landed vehicle. Astronomical, environmental and social explanations were proposed, including misidentified lights, rumor amplification and imaginative group storytelling. The case is valuable as a record of how a local child-witness report became a global news event. The existence of TASS coverage demonstrates publicity, not independent verification of every detail. CE3 is retained because the central testimony describes visible figures leaving and returning to a craft. The portrait shows witnesses at a safe distance and avoids the alleged disappearance. It is an illustrative reconstruction, not a photograph or faithful copy of any child drawing.
