Case description
In early June 1994, people gathering wild plants near Hongqi, or Red Flag, forestry farm in Heilongjiang noticed a bright white object on the southern slope of Phoenix Mountain. Meng Zhaoguo and his relative Li Honghai set out to investigate on June 7. They initially wondered whether something had fallen from the sky that might be salvaged.
Meng later described a large, smooth object resting among rocks, with a supporting projection and a curved tail-like section. As the men approached, both reported painful, electric-shock-like sensations. Meng said the sensation intensified around metal objects he was carrying. After several attempts to get closer, they withdrew and returned to the forestry settlement.
On June 9, Meng accompanied forestry officials and workers back to the mountain. While looking through binoculars, he cried out and collapsed. People attending him described confusion, difficulty speaking, sensitivity to light and unusual reactions when metal touched him. The early catalogue condenses this stage into a report that a beam struck him.
Meng subsequently told investigators that an unusual-looking figure had incapacitated him. He also described being taken into the white object on the night of July 16, where he was shown the comet impacts on Jupiter and received a warning concerning Earth. CCTV's 2005 investigation interviewed Meng, Li, local observers and members of the original inquiry, preserving the distinction between the June approach, the witnessed collapse two days later and Meng's later onboard account.
