Case description
A 1996 UFO Roundup digest, citing Peru’s El Expreso newspaper of February 3, described a January 31 encounter on Pampas Lampa near Recuay. The report named Silvio Cancio Bedoya and local Quechua shepherds as observers. Objects allegedly came from the direction of Lake Cococha, with six smaller craft grouped around a larger vehicle. A violet light was said to illuminate the valley as the formation moved along the Río Santo area.
According to the digest, the larger craft landed near the Romatambo stream. Two occupants, about one metre tall, emerged wearing gunmetal-grey helmets and matching coveralls. They were described as having large heads, long thin arms and short bowed legs. Carrying transparent containers, they supposedly collected soil, grass, flowers, water and algae while ignoring the observers. At about 8:40 a.m., the figures returned aboard and the objects departed vertically.
The fuller narrative is a morning event, whereas the imported catalogue assigns noon. Its evidence remains a newspaper-to-newsletter chain, not a reviewed investigation or authenticated sample. The underlying catalogue also carries a hoax flag, but no accompanying confession or specific hoax finding was located in the accessible sources. That flag warrants explicit disputed context; it does not justify inventing a demonstrated exposure. The illustration reconstructs the reported sampling scene and the unusually described suited figures.
