Case description
NICAP’s historical summaries record an observation in Indiana on 24 January 1957 involving a commercial pilot and other observers on the ground. The reported configuration was four brilliant white lights arranged in a line. The trailing object was described as larger than the others, egg-shaped and pulsating. The record concerns an aerial formation, with no reported landing or close interaction.
The 1964 UFO Evidence lists the case in its aviation material and formation tables, where Indianapolis appears as the location in one table. Its reference points to independent reports supplied to NICAP board member and broadcaster Frank Edwards. The short published entry does not name the pilot or other observers, explain their precise positions, or provide an aircraft type, altitude, distance or reliable duration. A later regional history places the observation in the evening, but supplies no fuller witness sequence.
Those limits matter when interpreting the Atlas’s entity classification. No person or creature was reported aboard the lights, and the summaries do not establish whether the four lights belonged to separate solid vehicles. The plate therefore uses four luminous forms, including the larger trailing oval, with representative ground observers. Their appearance and viewing location are contextual choices rather than recovered witness portraits. The report remains a brief historical sighting whose origin cannot be determined from the available published details.
