Case description
This record concerns Sunday, June 28, 1959, the final night of the well-known Boianai mission sighting sequence in Papua New Guinea. Father William Booth Gill and other mission residents had already reported much more elaborate observations on June 26 and 27. The June 28 entry is more limited: lights appeared at differing heights, with some summaries giving a total of eight around 6:45 p.m.
Later that night, at approximately 11:20, Gill reportedly heard a loud bang on the mission roof, compared to metal falling from a height. On going outside, he saw four lights or objects high above the building. No impact evidence was found when the roof was inspected the next morning. The available retellings vary in their precise initial count, so the inherited “up to eight” is more defensible than a fixed claim of eight structured craft.
The humanlike figures and apparent exchanges of waves belong principally to the June 26–27 accounts. They should not be transferred to this separate June 28 catalogue entry. Gill’s letters and notes are important historical documentation, but descriptions of distant lights do not alone establish their origin. The plate consequently shows mission observers and distant lights, preserving this night’s limited observations while linking it narratively to the broader series.
