Case description

Her car was passed by a low flying object of huge size, which showed large, very bright white lights at the front and back and a flashing red light in its center. THE BASE CONTROL TOWER REPORTED SEVERAL UNIDENTIFIED AIRCRAFT OF VARIOUS TYPES IN THE AREA WITH THE HIGHEST BEING AT 36,000 FEET. NO UNIDENTIFIED OR STRANGE OBJECTS WERE OBSERVED BY ANY OF THE CONTROL TOWER OPERATORS AT THE TIME X THE 932ND ACAW SQUADRON WAS IN CONTACT WITH THE TWO OBSERVERS AT THE TIME FOR THE SIGHTING BUT COULD NOT "PAINT" OR VISUALLY SEE THE OBJECT. THEY STATED TO THE BEST OF THEIR KNOWLEDGE THE OBJECT MOVED VERY SLIGHTLY DURING THE 5 MINUTES THEY SAW IT. Pacific Standard Time on January 16, 1961, a spectacular fireboll was seen and reported in various parts of California. The object was seen travelling from east to west, and left a trail of sparks and flaming particles behind it. The luminosity was first observed at an estimated altitude of about 90 miles, and the object was followed down to about 40 miles, at which point it appears to have gone out of sight. From the various reports, the following data have been compiled: Altitude of first observation - about 90 miles Altitude of last observation - about 40 miles Duration of visible path - 6 to 8 seconds Velocity - estimated at about 10,000 mph Length of path - about 200 miles Direction - from east northeast to west southwest Data recorded time at end point Observed time at end point Seen over Passed over Radians uncorrected Path curvature parabolic Radians corrected Parabolic orbit: 1=11°, 2=17°, 3=17°, 4=17° For comparison, white Sundisk's orbit was different- just two observers from his paper, their differences due to what velocity they adopted: d1=12.5°, b1=11°, c1=11°, d2=11.5°, b2=11°, c2=11° It is rather surprising that our parabolic orbit, while in agreement with the above in velocity, is not in agreement with the various distance-the true being about 1 mile being indicated, while the various observers have it farther away-much farther away. This condition has been brought up before and been the cause of much discussion among the numerous observers who have reported and yet do not agree on the characteristics which they have observed. Paul noticed a bright object descending to the ground.
