Case description
At about 11 a.m. on 18 April 1961, Joe Simonton said a noise drew him to the window of his rural home near Eagle River, Wisconsin. He saw a bright chromium-coloured disc, like two saucers joined together, and went outside. A hatch opened, revealing a short man who silently held up a jug and gestured for water. Simonton took it inside, filled it and brought it back. His account described three clean-shaven, humanlike occupants roughly five feet tall, wearing dark two-piece outfits and close-fitting caps; he compared their appearance to men of Italian descent.
Looking into the dim, dark interior, he said he saw one man at controls and another cooking small cakes on a flameless grill. After gestures concerning the food, an occupant handed him several perforated cakes—four in his later account, while early newspaper versions sometimes say three. The hatch closed; the craft rose, tilted and departed rapidly, with a blast of air bending a nearby pine. He estimated the encounter lasted no more than five minutes and later reasoned that the absence of landing marks meant the machine had hovered.
Local judge Frank Carter forwarded a sample to NICAP, whose correspondence records considerable scepticism and disagreement over investigating the claim. J. Allen Hynek also interviewed Simonton. Laboratory findings were consistent with ordinary terrestrial pancake ingredients, not exotic material. Hynek considered a psychological explanation, while acknowledging the man's apparent sincerity in his contemporary notes. The surviving food and investigation document a claim and its reception; they do not prove that visitors brought it from another world. Nearby later sightings are separate reports, not witnesses to this exchange.
