Santa Ana photographic UFO report — August 3, 1965

Orange County highway employee Rex Heflin reported photographing an unusual object near Myford Road and Walnut Avenue on 3 August 1965. Around midday, he had stopped his work van to document vegetation obscuring a road sign. He said the van radio would not connect and a metallic, hat-shaped object crossed his view. His Polaroid camera was already available for road work. No occupants were reported. Heflin took one picture through the windshield and two through the passenger window as the object moved east. He described wobbling motion, a dark underside and a rotating greenish-white band or wedge of light underneath. It then reportedly gained altitude and departed rapidly. A fourth photograph showed a dark smoke-like ring. Accounts differ about exact timing and how far he drove before that image; the radio subsequently worked. The Santa Ana Register published photographs in September, prompting extensive investigation. Project Blue Book treated the photographs as a hoax, while NICAP analysts disputed the conclusion. Later claims of a supporting string were themselves challenged, including by Druffel, Wood and Kelson’s 2000 reanalysis. The reporting chain also includes alleged removal of originals by purported officials and their later return; sources disagree about the return year. Such disputes are part of the evidence history, not proof of an official retrieval operation or extraterrestrial vehicle. The reconstruction depicts Heflin taking a photograph and the complete reported object, keeping the later smoke-ring phase separate.
