A Ministry of Defence report dated 16 May 1985 records an observation from a garden in the Hitchin area of Hertfordshire. The informant and his wife were stationary outdoors, looking with the naked eye toward RAF Henlow to the northwest. They described one small silvery object with a red upper part and a bright yellow bottom. The form says it appeared about 10 degrees above the ground and more than 3 miles away, on the far side of Henlow. It allegedly moved quickly sideways and returned to its original position. The sky was described as clear, with lakes listed among nearby geographic features. The observation had begun roughly 45 minutes before the report was received at 21:36 Z and was still continuing when the form was completed. These details come directly from DEFE 24/1923,pages 158–159, which correct several OCR-derived problems in the ledger: garden-position instructions had become a fictitious place name,10 degrees became 40, and the date-time group was misread as a clock time. The report was made to the RAF Henlow guardroom. No occupants, landing, physical contact or resolved craft outline appear in the form. Its official custody documents a reported observation, not an identification of the object or a government finding of extraterrestrial activity.
