Case description

Between 10:00 and 10:05 p.m. on 27 November 1953, a research assistant and his wife observed seven lights near a railway–road junction in Surrey, British Columbia. The husband’s letter says six were visible through substantial cloud and a seventh was clearer, circular and blue-white, with a halo. The lights were irregularly arranged over a broad section of the southeastern sky rather than a fixed geometric formation. The clearest light seemed to rise and fall as it brightened and dimmed. The other lights gradually faded; another briefly became brighter, then disappeared, leaving a final light that also dimmed out. The couple remained stationary during the roughly five-minute observation and heard no associated sound. Their letter records light rain and low cloud, conditions relevant to apparent outlines, halos and changing visibility. An RCAF intelligence summary called the objects brilliant silver discs and supplied distance and altitude estimates. It acknowledged that no photographs were obtained and that no interception was attempted because the report arrived later. The summary found no known aircraft or balloon explanation in the checks it described, but that is not independent proof of solid discs. Neither the witnesses’ letter nor the military summary describes beings, a landing or close contact.
