Case description
Two girls reported a very bright star-like appearance while walking through the Baker Lake settlement on 29 October 1962, at approximately 21:20. The contemporary police report uses the historical Northwest Territories designation; Baker Lake is now in Nunavut. The girls were facing south toward the lake when the brilliance attracted their attention under a clear, starry sky.
They described a light initially appearing stationary for a brief moment, then moving rapidly west across their field of view. It was silver with a slight blue cast and seemed two or three times larger than the brightest visible star. Its brightness faded quickly and it disappeared after travelling only a few degrees. The entire observation was estimated at three to five seconds, with no sound heard.
Both girls had seen shooting stars before but considered this different because it looked brighter and more gradually moving, without the usual meteor train. That comparison records their interpretation, not an exclusion of every meteor or other conventional phenomenon. No measurable dimensions, close approach, structured vehicle, occupants or ground effects are described. The report supplies no identification on the recovered page. The plate therefore shows two representative fully clothed girls and a small silvery-blue light over the settlement, keeping uncertain ages, likenesses, landscape and apparent scale illustrative.
