Case description

On 1 October 1954, at 9:20 a.m., a Canadair chief operations officer and test pilot flying an F-86 Mark V Sabre over Montreal noticed a high contrail above the northern end of Lake Champlain. He was initially at 30,000 feet heading south. By 9:32 he had climbed to an indicated 51,000 feet at Mach 0.7. He thought a black dot ahead of the trail might be a single-engine aircraft. At his Sabre's maximum altitude, the pilot could neither climb farther nor close on the target, which he estimated at 60,000–65,000 feet, travelling at roughly his own speed. He turned east and reported that the contrail made a similar turn. Returning toward Montreal from the Burlington, Vermont, area, he saw the trail apparently climbing at about forty-five degrees before disappearing. No radar painted the object or aircraft. The 3 November intelligence memorandum describes an interview by Captain D. W. Galvin and review of a recording of the pilot's ground-radio conversation. The reporting officer considered the account authentic and reliable. Identification enquiries through Canadian and American military channels reportedly yielded no explanation. That assessment supports the existence of a serious aviation report, not an identification of extraterrestrial technology. The target itself remained a distant dot ahead of a contrail: no occupant, landing or close approach was described, and the plate preserves that limited visual information.
