Case description
The federal correspondence describes a weather-instrument recovery on 24 April 1957, although the catalogue assigns this record to 1967. James Babineau of rural Minto reportedly found a burst rubber balloon, parachute and roughly 2½-pound radiosonde mechanism in the Sheffield area of New Brunswick. No aerial manoeuvres, unusual occupants or unidentified vehicle are described in the letter.
Army headquarters at St Anne’s Point Barracks, Fredericton, wrote to the U.S. Army Signal Corps Laboratories at Fort Monmouth on 29 April 1957. The mechanism bore U.S. Army Signal Corps markings, including a radiosonde modulator and transmitter. Because no visible instructions identified its launch point or requested return destination, the equipment was being sent to the laboratories by parcel post. An accompanying intelligence note circulated copies of that correspondence.
Other attached letters concern Clifford Hill’s separate recovery in King’s County and correspondence from 1956; they should not be treated as additional witnesses to Babineau’s find. The scan also contains a geographically anomalous east-longitude notation, which is not a reliable basis for fixing the recovery point. This is documented conventional equipment, and the catalogue’s entity and close-encounter tags are not supported by the described material.
