Case description
James Harrold Campbell and his son reported an orange object while flying southwest of Oakburn, Manitoba, on 5 August 1968, around 9:20 p.m. The RCMP report places the aircraft seven to eight miles southwest of Oakburn, within the Shoal Lake district, flying about one thousand feet above the ground below a heavy cloud ceiling. Visibility was estimated at ten miles.
Campbell described one brilliant orange object, roughly fifty feet across and ten feet thick, initially seeming to hover over a field about a mile west of the aircraft. It did not look as though it was burning. It then moved quickly westward at approximately the aircraft's altitude. Father and son watched for at least five minutes, possibly close to ten. The object disappeared, perhaps through cloud, reappeared and was eventually lost to view.
The sighting was reported the next day, with a detailed report received later in August. The report says Campbell had been flying for six months, was seeing his first UFO and estimated distances by road allowances. It records no propulsion explanation, occupant, landing or instrumentation confirming the object's dimensions or range. The reconstruction therefore preserves the father-and-son aviation viewpoint and orange oval appearance, while treating the aircraft model, portraits and apparent scale as illustrative. The district label should not move the episode into Shoal Lake town itself.
