Case description

At about 8:30 p.m. Atlantic Standard Time on 30 December 1968, Donald Austin noticed a bright object while driving along Golden Mile Road near Saint John, New Brunswick. When he reached the Spruce Lake area, he pointed it out to his sister Mary and other residents. Mary contacted the RCMP shortly afterwards. The original transmissions read 20:30, resolving the ledger’s garbled 4:30 p.m. wording. Donald reportedly followed the light by car toward St. George. He described an apparent size comparable to a helicopter, changing brightness, occasional red and green coloring, and a white light that sometimes seemed to go out. Other observers described a yellowish-white half-moon shape with a flat bottom and rounded top. Their estimated heights and distances changed markedly during an observation lasting approximately 45 minutes. The RCMP follow-up names seven observers, including members of the Austin family, Jo-Anne Dunham, Jean Desrochers and Kenneth Fair, with spelling variants across copies. The officer recorded broadly similar descriptions and considered them sober and reliable. The report was concluded without further action unless instructed otherwise. It preserves a multiple-witness light observation, not photographs, instrument measurements, a landing or any occupant. The image’s gathered witnesses are an explicit composite of their related views.
