Case description

On 9 January 1969, around 7:55 p.m., a Bell Island RCMP member heard colleagues discussing an unidentified object over police radio and drove toward the island's west end. On No. 2 Road he saw a round bright light high to the northwest. The sky was generally clear, with a few light clouds to the east. He thought it moved downward faster than an ordinary star but slower than a falling star. After several seconds, the light appeared to stop, fade and change to orange, occasionally red. It sometimes faded to a point or disappeared and returned three or four seconds later. The officer reported no sound and explicitly said he could not establish an object's shape. It was last observed low toward the western horizon. His roadside viewpoint had no other known local observer. A broader Harbour Grace transmission records a civilian report and observations by several police members in different locations, describing round-to-triangular appearance, orange-to-red colour and apparent westward movement followed by returns northwest. Those descriptions must remain attributed to their respective viewpoints rather than being assembled into a single engineered triangular craft. Police-radio coordination is documented, but neither a radar track nor an occupant appears in these pages. The plate follows the Bell Island officer's own unresolved light report and keeps the other observers in the narrative.
