Case description

A Corner Brook RCMP report dated 19 January 1969 reviews local observations from 30 December onward and separates two phenomena that the imported summary mixes together. On 30 December at 17:30, a woman reported a large, reddish, apparently metallic object hovering over the Blomidon golf course with a revolving light beneath it. She said it remained for about half an hour before disappearing. Two CBC employees interviewed promptly described the same view differently. They had watched a jet aircraft leave a vapor trail, which the setting sun illuminated yellow, then red and blue. The glow persisted for roughly twenty minutes before dissolving, without a visible metal body, noise or other unusual feature. The officer regarded the original interpretation as an optical effect involving sunlight and the aircraft trail, rather than a recovered vehicle. The wider series of western-sky reports involved a conspicuously bright, star-like object visible on repeated evenings. A Deer Lake astronomer with her own observatory identified that object as Venus and explained its apparent drifting, dimming and color fluctuations near the horizon. The report notes that police themselves and many residents had seen the bright point, and concludes that these observations did not establish meteors, fireballs or unidentified craft. The plate depicts the sunset vapor-trail explanation associated with 30 December, explicitly distinguishing it from the separate Venus reports. No occupants or encounter with beings occur in the recovered pages.
