Case description
At approximately 9:45 p.m. on April 27, 1969, Collin George Whitehurst noticed a pinkish light while standing in his front yard in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. It appeared to move in an undulating path and flash intermittently. He fetched his wife Anne and their sons, aged nine and six, who watched before the light dropped out of sight behind intervening buildings.
Whitehurst compared its brightness to a distant vehicle headlight and estimated a considerable altitude and distance. These were visual estimates. The RCMP report records no sound, trail, occupants or recognizable vehicle. An early telex contained a date error that was explicitly corrected to April 27.
Police patrols found nothing unusual, and an aircraft search the following morning was negative. Investigators checked local air traffic and considered whether a railway locomotive's rotating light could explain the observation. No suitable train movement was identified, and that explanation was rejected.
The decisive follow-up is dated April 29. RCMP established that three local teenagers had flown a kite at North Memorial School grounds, approximately a quarter mile north of the family's residence. A four-cell flashlight attached to it had a red plastic ring that produced the pink appearance. Its string broke at about the reported time; a similar display the next night was identified. The original file therefore resolves the sighting as a kite and flashlight, with no basis for an occupant or close-encounter classification.
