Case description
The Smith’s Falls entry derives from Oscar Fader’s October 29, 1969 report, also preserved under a second Atlas archive record. The original RCMP sheet, dated November 3, is reproduced in Canada FOIA Part 04. Retaining both imported identifiers preserves provenance; it does not double the number of independent sightings.
Fader was driving toward work at Merrickville around 5:35 a.m. when he stopped on Highway 43 about three miles from Smiths Falls because his car was heating. After opening the hood, he noticed a large reddish fireball near the town’s horizon, apparently travelling north to south. He estimated ten seconds and reported no sound during the visual observation. The sky was clear with a bluish cast, and the weather brisk and frosty. No surface structure, cockpit or occupant was described.
His wife was separately awakened by a loud sound. Police and radio-station reports placed a sonic boom around 5:43 a.m. Uplands confirmed jet exercises, and the investigator favoured a jet explanation. The apparent timing discrepancy remains visible rather than silently synchronized. This plate uses a different view of Fader and the stopped car, showing the reported light rather than asserting that a jet was visually identified.
