Case description

At about 8:45 p.m. on 14 August 1970, residents of Little Hearts Ease and nearby St. Jones, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland, reportedly watched a brilliant red object pass over their communities. Ernest Norris telephoned RCMP at 9 p.m., saying his family had seen something resembling a burning aircraft falling from the sky. A patrol contacted the family immediately. They described a rushing or burning sound, a blood-red head with a paler tail, and enough light to illuminate the settlement and cast distinct shadows. The object moved northeast, appeared to pass above the village and was said to descend into the harbour mouth after wobbling and shedding pieces. They estimated a head eight to ten feet long and about four feet wide, with additional tail length, at roughly a quarter-mile altitude; these were visual judgments. The radio summary gives about five minutes in view. The officer searched the reported water-impact area by boat but found nothing; Gander airport checks found no overdue or missing aircraft. The postmistress and her husband at St. Jones supplied a matching account. The completed RCMP follow-up concluded that nothing indicated anything other than a genuine fireball sighting. This record's abbreviated location, T. Bay, means Trinity Bay, not Thunder Bay. It is an archival version of the same incident represented by the Little Hearts Ease entry, not evidence of a second event or reported occupants.
