Case description

On 25 November 1970, Lawrence Charles Smith and his brother Manus Eugene Smith reported several reddish-orange lights near Bear Point in Shelburne County, Nova Scotia. They contacted an RCMP officer at approximately 9:50 p.m. Their account described five or six lights apparently 30–50 feet above the ground, watched for about 20–30 seconds while their car was moving toward home. The brothers said the lights disappeared without obvious movement, and one light went out and returned at least once. They also reported their car’s tape player stopping during the sighting. An immediate police search found nothing unusual at the location. A separate account from Corporal Timothy Daniel Nielson, accompanied by Carole June Smith and her mother Cathelene Mary Smith near Smithville, described four lights in a straight line, one intermittently darkening and the group gradually sinking behind trees. The December RCMP report places the two viewing areas about 20 miles apart and estimates the observations around 9:40 p.m. It records separate interviews, perceived reliability and clear conditions, while acknowledging no explanation. Differences in count, arrangement and motion should remain attached to their respective witnesses rather than becoming one detailed craft. The apparent inch-scale sizes and heights were estimates. No occupants, landing or solid structure connecting the lights were reported.
