Case description

At about 22:40–22:50 MST on 10 February 1973, Delores and Allan Phillips and their twelve-year-old son Grant were driving near Lake Bonavista in southwest Calgary. They reported two unusually large lights, one white and one red, low in the southern sky. Houses briefly blocked the view before the family saw the lights again while approaching the lake. The object appeared to hover roughly 100 feet above ground. The lights seemed 12–15 feet apart, with a long silver-grey bar between them; glare prevented a clear view of the hull. Lowering a rear window revealed no sound. After roughly eight to ten minutes, two additional white lights appeared. The object moved slowly east, turned, and accelerated northwest toward central Calgary, maintaining apparent altitude until it disappeared. The family remained in their vehicle and reported no occupants. Delores contacted RCMP at 00:30 on 11 February, explaining the catalogue’s following-day date. Police checked air traffic and found incoming Boeing 727 flights using an unusual runway approach. Investigators considered whether bright landing lights, slow approaches and ice crystals could explain apparent hovering; that was an investigative possibility, not a demonstrated identification. The original report preserves both the family’s account and the aircraft explanation, without evidence for an entity encounter.
