Case description

The original RCMP correspondence concerns a sighting near Edmonton’s southern city limits on October 6, 1973, about 10:20 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time. Kathy Shanahan, approximately twenty-two and a university student, reported it with her husband Craig, twenty-six, an Air Canada passenger agent. The October 17 covering letter and attached October 7 messages survive in the Canadian archival file. They described a bright, fiery-looking round ball moving southwest under cloudy conditions, with a humming sound. Its altitude was estimated at one thousand feet, and the observation lasted five to ten minutes before the light descended toward the horizon. Craig reportedly checked with airport control; no corresponding aircraft or radar observation was established in that inquiry. Police also contacted R. I. Broughton, who thought the object was a plastic balloon but supplied little further information. That suggestion is a recorded opinion, not a conclusively demonstrated identification. The pages contain no occupant, landing or direct interaction report. The plate shows representative versions of the young couple and a distant rounded luminous object, without adding a detailed spacecraft or beings. Official retention documents the report and follow-up, rather than confirming an extraterrestrial explanation.
