Case description
A man near Rathwell in South Norfolk reported a striking object at about 05:45 in January 1974. The initial telegram dates it 7 January, while his signed statement and later report identify 6 January. He first watched from his home as a bright object approached and hovered near willow trees, roughly 150 feet away and twenty to thirty feet above the ground.
He described a silver oval or squash-ball-shaped body, thirty to forty feet across and fifteen to twenty feet high, with a small transparent dome and projecting exhaust pipes. Flames were allegedly visible during the first phase. He then drove along Provincial Road 244 and saw what he believed was the same object near the highway, its dome glowing white and the pipes dark. It rose and departed southwest, diminishing to a star-like point within seconds.
Returning in daylight, he found no marks at the supposed landing location. Winnipeg air traffic control and CFB Portage la Prairie reported no radar trace. The RCMP considered his account consistent and sincere and forwarded it to the National Research Council; that character assessment does not confirm the object’s nature. No occupants were described. The reconstruction follows the roadside phase and preserves the unresolved date.
