Case description
At approximately 10:10 p.m. on 10 October 1974, John Breen was flying a Cessna toward Gander with passenger Janice Gould. Gould first noticed a greenish light near Grand Falls. Breen said it appeared below his aircraft, moved ahead and slowed, then passed beneath and behind before returning ahead. He initially considered a reflection of his starboard navigation light and briefly switched the aircraft lights off, but said the green light remained.
The RCMP account gives an observation of about 25 minutes. Breen, himself an air-traffic controller, contacted Gander control closer to the airport. Controller Robert Lawrence reportedly obtained a target for only two radar sweeps, without identifying it as an aircraft; contact could not be maintained. The brief radar trace and visual light should not be treated as a securely matched, continuously tracked vehicle.
The same file includes a separate observation around 4:15 a.m. on 11 October by the captain and copilot of a descending DC-8. They described red-and-white flashing lights pacing their flight for 5–7 minutes before disappearing in cloud. In that second event, Gander radar reportedly showed only the DC-8. Different aircraft, dates, light colors and radar circumstances remain distinct. Neither report describes occupants or a resolved craft shape, and the plate depicts only the Cessna phase.
