Case description

This record concerns marks in a wheat field near Rossburn, Manitoba, rather than a witnessed aerial encounter. Farmer Mike Pomehichuk contacted the RCMP on the evening of 4 September 1977, saying something had landed and left circles. His proposed landing was an inference from the marks, not an event he described watching. The imported unspecified Canadian locality can be narrowed to the Rossburn detachment area. A constable visited the farm on 5 September and photographed approximately six circular patches, each recorded as about fifteen feet across. The wheat was pressed tightly down in a counterclockwise direction. On a return visit the next day, the farmer showed additional marks in an uncut portion of the field. He estimated from the wheat heads that they had formed during the preceding week and a half. The report says no tracks led to those circles. The constable had no explanation and forwarded the account and photographs to A. Claude at the National Research Council. A handwritten comment on the copy says the photographs looked like the effects of a little tornado, a proposed interpretation rather than a demonstrated finding. Later crop-circle literature gives different totals and sizes. The plate follows the initial inspection, showing a representative portion of the reported patches with farmer and constable together. It adds no craft, occupants, burn marks or witnessed landing.
