Case description

On 16 October 1977, Morley Haggerty’s 10-year-old son Shaun called him outside their home west of Drayton Valley, Alberta. Haggerty’s signed RCMP statement places the sighting at approximately 6:50 p.m. He described a distant golden, oblong object in the southwest, moving southward, and watched for roughly half a minute to a minute. Shaun reportedly thought a beam or fiery trail extended behind it; his father said he could not clearly see that feature. Neighbor Leonard Morrill independently described an egg-shaped object with a tail of flame while looking west from his mobile-home kitchen. He said it disappeared toward the southeast and that four jets appeared to follow it. His stated starting time, around 6:00–6:15 p.m., and duration of 15–30 minutes differ from Haggerty’s much shorter account. The supposed jets and pursuit are Morrill’s interpretation, not a documented military interception. The 24 October RCMP memorandum forwarded their statements to the National Research Council and said further investigation had revealed nothing. It noted that the observers were looking toward sunset. Apparent measurements of a foot or two and an estimated five-mile distance cannot establish the object’s physical size. No occupants, landing or resolved craft structure appear in the file.
