Case description
On February 25, 1978, Judith Ann Comerford was driving from Hay River to Pine Point with her daughter Diana and the girl’s friend Elizabeth Parker. Their RCMP statements describe a reddish-orange luminous object seen near the road and trees for roughly thirty to forty-five minutes. It remained ahead of or beside their car, appeared low at times, and seemed higher on other stretches. They described an oval shape and changing colour rather than a clearly detailed mechanical vehicle.
The women reported the sighting that night and gave statements after police checked with aviation contacts. Those inquiries found no known military or civil aircraft explaining the observation. Judith also described radio reception fading, but the file does not demonstrate a physical connection between the radio and the light. Police subsequently patrolled the route without finding anything unusual.
Constable D. A. McLeod considered a colour phase of the rising Moon a possible explanation, noting the light’s position relative to the moving car and its apparent height changes. Judith firmly rejected that suggestion. Diana’s handwritten continuation says the light became pale yellow and seemed to merge into, or become, the Moon; McLeod recorded the family’s disagreement over how to interpret that impression.
The archive preserves both the witnesses’ conviction and the officer’s proposed explanation. No occupants or abduction are described. The plate uses an unresolved orange oval light beside a winter road and the three people in their car, avoiding the later embellishment of a fully described spacecraft.
