Case description
The January 11, 1967, episode concluded a sequence of unusual lights reported around an Aveyron farm. In F. Lagarde’s published interview, the family’s son described taking a car out after seeing a white ball on the road. He followed it and stopped near a tall, bright “shell” object. As he opened the door, it brightened, whistled, tilted and departed.
Continuing behind the ball, he reached a junction where the engine and lights reportedly failed. An oval dish-shaped object then appeared roughly twenty metres to his right, several metres above a field. Two rounded domes stood diagonally on top. Through green illumination and blur he thought he could distinguish two helmeted humanlike silhouettes in green overalls trimmed with white. He repeatedly qualified the clarity of that view; faces and eyes were not visible.
He described heat, temporary inability to move and a vibrating roadside sign. The investigators questioned whether fear contributed to the immobility and noted inconsistencies between retellings. Their reconstruction used tape-recorded interviews and a route visit, not direct observation of the event. The plate depicts the two-dome object separately from the earlier upright shell, with indistinct occupants matching the witness’s uncertainty. The inherited spelling “Aveyon” is retained only as a catalogue variant.
