Case description

Edward William Smith’s RCMP statement describes an observation beginning around 20:30 on 6 April 1978 at Rosedale, British Columbia. While preparing for bed, he and his wife noticed an odour resembling burning wax, inside and outside the house. Looking from the kitchen, he saw flashing red and green lights moving west over the house, initially taking them for an aircraft. The distant light then appeared to stop and change position vertically and sideways. Smith likened its brightness to a star or electric welding, with red, green and orange colours. He watched for about an hour and a half before contacting police; his wife and son also observed lights. His narrative includes a meteor-like streak, a later bright star and three adjacent lights that went out. Officers attended and observed further aerial lights, including a separately recognised helicopter. Smith gave the statement on 16 April. The page records several phases, not a single detailed close encounter, and does not establish that the smell came from anything in the sky. No occupants or resolved hull are described. Witness estimates of distance and motion remain estimates; the reconstruction uses the initial distant-light phase rather than combining every light into one machine.
